Veronica Turner was born on April 23, 1981 in Rhode Island to a retired Air Force mechanic and his Japanese immigrant wife. Frank Turner met Kaoru Yoshikawa while stationed on an Air Force base in Okinawa Japan in 1978. In 1980 they were married while Frank still served his tour in Japan. December of 1980 Frank ended his service and brought his pregnant wife home to the small town of Langley, Rhode Island.

Veronica grew up in the closed minded community until the age of 13 when her parents divorced and Kaoru returned to her family home in Japan, taking Veronica with her. An outsider among her own people, Veronica had a rough time at school where the children mocked her parentage and her American background. Veronica dropped her last name in favor of her mother's surname, as well as taking on the nickname "Ronni".

Being unpopular in school, she fell in with a bad crowd that was also shunned. Light drug use and smoking became habits at the age of 16. At 17, she was kicked out of her mother's home when she was discovered stealing money from her grandfather to support her habit. With nowhere to go, she joins a group a squatters who have made a home in an abandoned cat food factory. Time passes and she tires of the lifestyle and the lack of ambition any of her "roommates" have so she takes up picking pockets to make an attempt at a normal life. On her 19th birthday, she picks the wrong man's pocket.

Oorumu Matsuda was a well known member of the Tengu Yakuza and lieutenant. He never would have noticed his wallet missing had if not been for the girl's jade green eyes. They captivated him and he had intended to offer her money to spend the evening with her. The wallet gone and his criminal instincts kicking in, he tackles her and procures his wallet from her. He forces her into an alleyway at gunpoint while he calls for several thugs to join him. When the five men arrived, he ordered them to beat her. Minutes pass and the men are ordered to ceased by Matsuda, leaving her face down on the pavement. Matsuda asks if she can stand. As she lifts herself up, Matsuda offers his hand. Her face distorted in anger and awash in blood, she smacks his hand away. One of the thugs draws his gun and before he could execute her for her disrespect, Matsuda disarms him. He orders his men to take her to one of their physicians to be treated at his expense and that no one is to harm her under any circumstance. Days pass and Matsuda visits Ronni to explain why he had allowed her to live. Her talent, her will and her defiance impressed him greatly. He offers her the opportunity to join the Tengu Yakuza under his command. She was allowed to refuse, he explained, but if she should ever be seen by him, she would be killed on the spot. Knowing what she had to go back to, she accepts.

Oorumu Matsuda would not have any petty pick pocket in his command though. He had her trained as a thief, using ninjitsu practices as a backdrop to her education. Study. Patience. Entry. Extract. Escape. These were the cornerstones that her new life was built upon. By the age of 21, Matsuda found that she was ready to put her training to the test. She was assigned to a team of burglars that attain rare jewelry, art and artifacts that are then sold to those that request them of the Tengu. Ronni's success catapulted her through the ranks of the Yakuza, her exploits even impressing those outside the Tengu. She was no longer a member of a team of thieves, but pulling heists herself. Her life had hit a pace of relative normalcy and definant happiness. She was respected and rewarded for something she excelled at. She had a nice condo filled with fine things she never could have dreamt of on the streets. Several high performance sports cars in her garage, including a Shelby 500 GT Cobra, one that was identical to the one her father had used to own, only her's was not in a state of disrepair.

One day Oorumu Matsuda received a request to obtain a statue of a crane that was solid jade with rubies set in the eyes. It was currently in the possession of Riina Saito, an arms dealer. The request came from Himura Watanabe, the head of the Tengu Yakuza. Matsuda immediately set Yoshikawa on the job. After weeks of planning, Veronica struck and it was a successful heist. Matsuda accompanied Veronica to Watanabe's estate to deliver the statue personally. Himura Watanabe was grateful, for the statue was a family heirloom that had disappeared from the possession of the family in the early 1960's. As a token of his gratitude he had arranged to have her and her possessions shipped to the United States. Before she could express her confusion, he explained that Riina Saito had close connections to the White Lotus Yakuza, whom the Tengu had an alliance with. In order to keep the peace, the Lotus will ignore the transgression and calm Saito if the thief is killed. Since they do not know the true identity of the perpetrator, a low level thug will be sacrificed instead while she is to be spared. But, in order to maintain the secret, Yoshikawa must not be seen in Japan in the service of the Tengu.

It was a lie. Her condo was in flames when she had returned home to pack. The cars in the garage were gone. She kept a clear head even as the thoughts of this betrayal racked her. She emptied a safety deposit box she had and bought another ticket to the US, destroying the one given to her by Watanabe. Her cell phone rang. It was Matsuda. He gave her a name and a phone number where she may find work. Veronica thanked him and crushed the phone. She said goodbye to her old life as the plane lifted off and said hello to her new life as she fell asleep.
